Fruit of Labor World Cultural Center Hosts Anti-Islamophobia Forum
A forum titled "Deconstructing Hate: Building a Stronger Movement Against Islamophobia and Other Oppressions" was hosted at Fruit of Labor World Cultural Center on April 26, 2017. Participants discussed about their work around anti-Islamophobia, worker rights, immigrant rights, anti-war/Palestine freedom, and other anti-oppression movement work.
Imam Khalid Griggs traveled from Winston-Salem to inform participants about threats to his mosque and how we could respond to the rising Islamophobia and other forms of bigotry. Nathanette Mayo, president of NC Public Workers Union or UE Local 150, informed participants about anti-Islamophobia resolution passed during Eastern Regional Meeting of UE Union (United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers Union). Participants discussed concrete actions to build a stronger anti-oppression movement. We had representatives from Muslims for Social Justice, Movement to End Racism and Islamophobia, Black Workers for Justice, UE150 - NC Public Service Workers Union, Jewish Voice for Peace - Triangle NC, Raleigh PACT, UNC Refugee Wellness, Comite de Accion Popular , Triangle SURJ, Triangle People's Assembly's Anti-Islamophobia Working Group, El Kilombo, Veterans for Peace - NC, and folks from other organizations/unaffiliated folks.
